AKVH recommends Hill’s Science Diet and
Prescription Diet pet foods. Prescription foods are formulated for specific
problems such as kidney disease, allergies, obesity and dental disease and can
only be purchased through veterinarians. Science Diet foods are the ‘over the
counter’ version of foods for healthy pets of various life stages and can be
purchased through veterinarians or premium pet stores. Due to limited storage
space in the hospital we may not always have your specific pet food in stock.
We can order any Science diet product for you if you ask. We order on Fridays
and the food arrives on Monday.
There are many flea/tick preventatives and
heartworm medications available these days. Drs. Autumn and Adam (and their pets
who frequently serve as test samples!) have gone through a lot to provide you
with what they feel are the best products. We believe that for our area of the
country which has a large amount of fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and worms, the
combination of Interceptor oral heartworm prevention and Frontline plus Flea and
Tick preventative works the best for dogs. There is no medication that will
prevent every parasite but this combination will prevent or kill
heartworms (live in the blood stream), roundworms, hookworms, whipworms
(intestinal worms), fleas and ticks. Other heartworm medicines such as
Heartgard and Iverheart do not prevent intestinal parasites like whipworms,
which we have here in Southern Maryland. Topical medications like Advantage and
Revolution may be good for killing fleas but do not kill ticks.
For cats we carry two products depending on your cat’s situation.
Our preference is Revolution for cats. It is a topical once monthly medication
that kills heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, ear mites and fleas. However, as
stated above it does not kill ticks well. Therefore, we also carry Frontline
plus for cats. It is topical as well and is excellent at killing fleas and
ticks. Unfortunately, there is no product for cats that does it all. Luckily,
most cats are fastidious groomers and ticks are not usually a problem for them
(they also seem resistant to Lyme disease!) so Revolution is usually sufficient.
Interceptor is now approved for cats but since it was designed for dogs and the
cat dosage is higher than the dog dosage the pills can be rather large.
